Two Years, Hummingbirds + McDonald’s | Personal

I’ve never been one for tradition, especially when it comes to my love life.

Tommy and I met in an AOL chatroom in 1999 and we chatted via IMs for about five months before we ever met in person. And even after that, most of our dates consisted of AOL instant message “pings” and “You’ve Got Mails.” But during the moments we were together, there wasn’t a lot of fancy dinners or nights out on the town. ย Instead we spent most of our time sitting on the couch eating pizza, drinking Minute Maid lemonade and watching sports. Pretty fancy huh? ๐Ÿ˜€

The simplicity in our happiness is probably what makes our relationship so strong. It doesn’t take a lot for us to be happy together, because essentially being together is all that really matters. Good times come in simple packages for us and frankly, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Last month we celebrated our 2-year Wedding Anniversary (12 years together total) in much of the same fashion. Quietly, perfectly, simply.ย We woke up late and spent most of our day in our pajamas in the backyard watching a baby hummingbird learn how to fly.

These little guys had been nestled in their little slice of home atop a fixture in our backyard for several days. So you can only imagine how exciting it was when we sat in the yard that morning and realized one of the babies was prepping himself for take off. Not sure if you’ve ever seen the process, but apparently learning how to fly means taking short flights and crashing to the ground. Over and over again. A little repetitive and scary, but truly amazing …

In fear that our little bird would getting eatin up by a larger bird or a possum or cat, Tommy spent more than an hour following this baby bird around and making sure he didn’t become somebody’s afternoon snack. Gotta love a husband who has this kind of patience and care for tiny creatures ๐Ÿ˜‰

And after a few hours, our little friend finally did learn how to fly …

Yep Internet, we spent our 2-year anniversary watching life unravel before us. It was simple, quiet and perfect. Much like our love. And yanno we had to celebrate our day with an uber fancy meal … McDonald’s sweet tea, fries and chicken nuggets at 1 a.m. to be exact ๐Ÿ˜‰ No one said love has to come in a fancy package. But it sure is pretty wonderful <3
